What is your role at Vinehall?
I am Head of Art
What subject/s do you teach?
I teach Art to the Prep School as well as Year 2.
What made you want to become a teacher?
To pass on some of the skills I have acquired through my years at art school and working as a professional artist. Also to see the moment when a pupil makes progress.
What do you enjoy most about Vinehall?
The people make Vinehall a good place to work. My colleagues are a hard-working bunch, who are dedicated to the pupils and have a great sense of humour; since starting here, I have found not just colleagues but friends. I also love to see the children enjoy my subject. And finally, the grounds.
What are you planning that you are most excited about?
The most exciting topic to date has been the whole school poppy project. It was hard work but very worthwhile. There are always new initiatives taking place. Watch this space …
What is your best teaching memory?
As a tutor in a previous role, I supported a Year 10 pupil with extremely low self-esteem and received a card from him thanking me for my efforts. It was wonderful to know that I made a difference to his future.
When you are not in the classroom I am most likely to be …
Looking after my extremely active family and dreaming of the next country to visit. In between all of this, I fit in the odd painting or two.
Something not many people know about you is …
I was a professional artist for around fifteen years, working on feature films for Warner Brothers and Dreamworks. I have also been a professional illustrator, being commissioned by clients such as the BBC, Harper Collins and numerous other publishers. To top that, I lived in the Canadian Rockies and snow-boarded on the black run at Whistler.
