Music is a critical aspect of a well-rounded education and offers untold benefits for our children. As Victor Hugo once wrote, ‘music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent’. Let our children create good noise!
Here are some reasons why music is an integral part of our school curriculum:
Music enhances cognitive development. Numerous studies have shown that music can improve children’s memory, language skills and ability to concentrate. These skills are essential for success in all areas of life.
Music promotes emotional and social development. Music can foster a sense of community and helps children to express themselves emotionally, all leading to better mental health and social skills. Music also builds cultural awareness, providing children with exposure to new cultures and global perspectives.
Music encourages creativity. Music in education encourages children to think creatively and imaginatively, skills that are vital in all areas of life.
Music improves academic performance. There is ample research to show that children involved in music tend to perform better in subjects such as maths, science and languages.
What is there not to sing about!?
Vinehall has been awarded the RHS Level 5 School Gardening Award, the highest achievement in the Royal Horticultural Society’s School Gardening Awards scheme.
As a school we have been working our way through the various levels over the past 18 months, embedding horticulture, nature and growing into our school life through the planting of an orchard, construction of a new vegetable garden, introduction of new gardening clubs and activities throughout the school, and culminating in our first horticultural whole school event – Vinehall’s Apple Day.
Rachel Borrows, our School Horticulturist, said:
‘I have been delighted with the enthusiasm and support shown by the whole school community for the various initiatives we have introduced. The children have embraced the opportunity to get dirt under their nails, whilst developing their practical horticultural skills and understanding of environmental issues.’
We are immensely proud of our two Year 7 Artists who were shortlisted for the annual Battle Abbey Trash Couture competition. Skye R and Isobel F responded extremely well to the theme, with highly imaginative creations that demonstrated an understanding of their chosen materials. Their garments were not only interesting to look at, but they highlighted the need to recycle and upcycle. Skye was the overall winner in her age category with her stunning dress and there were many very positive comments about Isobel’s work.
Well done to all those who submitted entries and huge congratulations to both of our finalists.
Welcome to Ancient Greece and the wedding of Pandora and Epimetheus! Pandora is a gift from Zeus, the King of the Gods. A strange box appears amongst the wedding presents and curiosity compels Pandora to open it. All manner of evil is released into the world! She grabs the box and runs away. This wasn’t part of Zeus’s plan! Follow the gods, goddesses, nymphs and mortals in their mad race to find Pandora and the box and restore hope to the world.
The cast and crew of Years 5 and 6 have been rehearsing all term and have worked incredibly hard to ensure this production was a hit. The children’s joy was infectious and proof of the magic of live theatre.
Special thanks to all the parents who helped with this production, finding and making costumes, collecting props, backdrops and more.
