Vinehall really is a remarkable place to work! When the future of the Year 8 musical was in doubt, Joff Powis himself stepped in to run rehearsals during the post CE programme and Debbie Gearey threw herself into so much more than the choreography to ensure that the show could go on. I just wafted back in for the final week of rehearsals to be amazed by the children’s hard work and skill. So, on Tuesday and Wednesday the Chaplin Theatre was the spooky home of ‘The Addams Family’, as our wonderful Year 8s performed their musical, with the support of their friends in Year 7.
Arthur P was absolutely mesmerising as the charming and romantic Gomez, with his two very glamorous and accomplished Morticias – Imogen W (Act 1) and Grace W (Act 2). The role of Wednesday was also split brilliantly between Daisy D and Camilla B. Her naughty brother Pugsley was a wonderfully over-the-top Matilda R, who made me laugh every time she set foot on stage. Clara F was the mad old granny; Monty G was a brilliantly weird Uncle Fester and Alfred E managed to maintain the gruff character of Lurch throughout. May A stepped into Mr Mal Beineke’s shoes with great aplomb and his ditzy rhyming wife was played superbly by Seren W and Polly S. Wednesday’s all American love interest, Lucas, was the lovely Henry P.
The Addams Ancestors were a fabulous ensemble team of Year 8s, joined by the Year 7 ‘Victims of Plague’ who helped so much with the singing. The Vinehall Family Band – led by Director of Music, Sue Glossop – was comprised of our marvellous visiting teachers Carl Greenwood (piano), Ed Chisholm (Percussion) and Jo Fooks (Saxophone).
Huge thanks to Tom Moore on lights, Ollie Dorman for helping with the set and John Alderson for some beautiful photos. There were an enormous number of costumes and props to beg, borrow or steal and buckets of face paint and ghostly hairspray to apply. I had the most amazing gang of parents working tirelessly all term and at each performance, especially Harriet Parkin and Janine Shellard. They were led and organised by the indefatigable Kate Hunt, my regular right-hand woman and all-round absolute super-star.
‘The Addams Family’ is an hilarious show, packed with great songs and wonderful characters. Considering the rehearsal period was so short and the circumstances unusual, I am enormously proud of these amazing children and delighted by their enthusiasm, creativity and hard work.
