Vinehall’s Service of Remembrance 2021 was a very moving occasion and a fitting testament to our service men and women across the world. It opened with a beautiful rendition of ‘I, the Lord of Sea and Sky’, before a fascinating address by Colonel (Retd) W R Walker. Roger is our Bursar who has served across the world, including Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Afghanistan. The children were astounded by his wonderful collection of medals, not only his own but those of his forebears and ones he has collected. Stories of sacrifice and dedication brought great depth to the occasion. Then our wonderful Year 8s recited ‘The Soldier’ by Rupert Brooke and ‘Consider the Poppy’ by Simon Armitage. Their poise, dignity and excellent delivery were a credit to the school. Roger delivered the exhortation most beautifully before Joff Powis played the Last Post prior to the silence and then the Reveille. A most moving performance of ‘I Vow to Thee my Country’ before prayers excellently led by Head Boy, Arthur P, and Head Girl, Clara F. They joined Roger and Joff to lay the wreaths by the school’s flagpole, surrounded by a sea of poppies created in art. Every child, from Year 2 to Year 8, was smartly turned out and behaved impeccably, with reverence and solemnity. Vinehall at its absolute best to honour our forces past and present.
