Huge excitement this week in our two drama clubs, as pupils enjoyed audition workshops for this term’s voluntary productions. So as not to pop any bubbles, there will be separate plays for each year group; Year 6 are doing Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’ and Year 5 ‘The Twits’. Mary Alderson, Director of Drama, was simply delighted with the talent on display and has had a difficult time finalising cast lists, but all participants will be very busy rehearsing these two most enjoyable and hilarious pieces.
Mary is also working with all of Year 5 in curriculum drama lessons as part of their timetable. Children are studying ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo, working closely with the English department to enhance core learning. These lessons elaborate on study in a practical way, whilst children also learn key drama skills (such as improvisation, mime, voice work, interpretation and stage craft) and build confidence.
In addition Mary is coaching Year 8 potential drama scholars individually to prepare them for assessments and interviews, helping to select appropriate pieces and assisting with portfolios. Supporting these talented thespians in weekly sessions is one of the many highlights of her position. A Saturday drama skills workshop for any interested Year 8s still has some spaces, but the group is likely to be a select and rewarding one!
It is going to be an inspiring and most entertaining term in the dramatic life of the school.
