Group round played four and won four.

After a few more lessons tweaking parts of their game for this tournament, the girls were prepared and ready to go.  They stamped their intentions straight away and played with determination throughout the tournament.  The first match against Holmewood House was polished and the first goal came from their rehearsed short corners, with Milly D sweeping the ball in off Izzie S’s initial shot.  Willow A went on to score a further two goals. The next match was against a very accomplished Danes Hill team.  However, Mary KB was determined not to let the ball go through her and made some spectacular saves.  The girls had some fine opportunities too and it was Willow to score again to win 1-0.  The next match was against Farlington.  Again they pressed the opposition, passing well and putting them under pressure.  Lara S scored the opening goal and soon after Willow added another to her belt to win 2-0.  The final match was against Roedean; full of confidence and wanting to finish the group with a complete set of wins, they headed straight towards the opposition’s goal.  Willow added her final and 5th goal to kick off the match.  Freda H got on the score board and then to finish the match Izzie scored from another well-rehearsed short penalty corner to finish the game 3-0.

Through to the semi-final of the cup, they had to play Sevenoaks.  This was an exciting match throughout. The opposition constantly attacked our circle, but the girls were defending brilliantly and Mary enjoyed making crucial saves.  Finally Sevenoaks managed to break through from a short penalty corner to take a 0-1 lead in the last few minutes.  The girls had a very successful tournament and should be pleased to finish joint 3rd in the cup.  The standard of hockey was high and every girl played the best I have ever seen them play.  Mary is Vinehall’s very own Gladiator goalkeeper. Margot F covered and tracked brilliantly at the back and helped bring that ball up through to attack. Izzie and Lara were strong and aggressive on the ball, sending through some brilliant balls to top goal scorer Willow.  Freda and Milly positioned themselves well, creating good leads and space.  Not forgetting our super subs Francesca F and Olivia S, making a strong instant impact against the oppositions to give them new problems to think about.

I was very proud of each and every girl; thank you to Miss Grundy for being the girls’ supporter on the side.
