The team travelled to Cumnor House on Saturday for what proved to be a fantastic start to the rugby season.  With everyone at the tournament having had limited time to prepare, we used the matches as a sort of training/pre-season exercise.  Understandably the team took a while to get going; however they got stronger and stronger with every minute played.  Our first three group games were against Great Walstead, Brighton College Prep and Saint Ronan’s.  Each game had their own challenges, with speed, good handling and an ever improving defence allowing us to come out on top in each game.

v Great Walstead   20-0   (Zuriel N 4)

v Brighton College Prep  20-5  (Zuriel N 3, Freddie L 1)

v Saint Ronan’s 30-0  (Freddie L 2, Daniel N 1, Gryff W 1, Basil S 2)

This meant we went through to the Lions draw of the tournament, where we had to face the three other teams with the best points differential from the group stages.

First up was Windelsham.  They started the brightest and scored early into the game, only for Freddie L and Basil S to score themselves and give us the lead. The Windelsham boys worked very hard and, with the hooter having sounded, scored in the corner to take the game into extra time. Extra time meant the game went to 6-a-side to start and unfortunately after an even beginning they broke free and scored.

Our next game was against Christs Hospital who started brilliantly.  Our defensive heroics from earlier seemed to disappear, with Christs running in three very quick tries.  The boys’ heads did not drop and, with some quick thinking and great running from Gryff W, Freddie L and Zuriel N, we were able to score four tries of our own in the space of four minutes.

The final game of the day saw us play Brighton College for a second time in what proved to be the match of the day.  In an extremely even contest, Brighton took the lead only for us to draw level at the death to take the game into extra time.  The rules of the tournament meant that with every minute of extra time played a team had to drop a player.  At 4 v 4 the game became a real fight for survival, with both sides making try saving tackles time and time again.  In what seemed like the longest period of extra time ever, the Brighton attack finally got through our amazing defence to win the game 10-15.

v Windelsham 10-15 (Freddie L 1, Basil S 1)

v Christ’s Hospital 20-15 (Zuriel N 3, Gryff W 1)

v Brighton College Prep 10-15 (Gryff W 1, Zuriel N 1)

3rd place overall and a great start to the rugby season.  Well done to all the squad, there was a lot to take out of the day; and especially to the boys who were playing in positions in which they have not previously played, who did a great job all morning!

Squad: Freddie P, Daniel N, George S, Freddie L, Gryff W, Thomas S, Zuriel N, Basil S, James W.
