Back from their camp, Year 5 were each treated to an hour-long taster session of sabre fencing with our fencing coach, Dr K.
First of all, they were introduced to the three safety rules before having the fencing footsteps explained to them. A game helped them secure this important skill and then it was protective kit on to start hacking and slaying in earnest.
In pairs, the pupils practised hitting each other on the head, flank and chest with lunges before trying to hit Dr K, who demonstrated (in most cases) how to block a hit.
Armed with all this knowledge, as well as their sabres, the pupils then faced off for a number of bouts at the end. Considering most had never fenced before, they did really well and, more importantly, had lots of fun clashing blades and fighting one another within the formal constraints of a fencing bout.
