On Tuesday 4th June 2019 Year 7 had the pleasure of participating in a workshop with David and Sally Chaplin and Margie Redstone, who told them all about the work of Rwanda Aid. The afternoon started in the Chaplin Theatre where David told the children about the history of Rwanda which was a real eye opener for the them. Whilst they have heard about Rwanda Aid before they had perhaps never appreciated the turbulent history of the Rwandan people. David explained how Rwanda Aid are helping to educate the children there.
The children then spent an hour making beautiful educational posters to go in the classrooms in Rwanda and help the children learn English words. Working in pairs, pupils designed their posters and then drew them onto rice bags, the material most commonly used in Rwanda, which David will take out to Rwanda. They produced some very imaginative designs, with a vast array of different categories including feelings, countries, shapes, colours, body parts, nature and the solar system.
Our Year 7 were the model of best behaviour and manners; they were captivated by David’s talk and inspired by the charity. Thank you so much to David, Sally and Margie for giving up their time to work with the children and also to Claire Bridges for helping us during the afternoon.
