A “STEM” Walk in the Park

How do you measure the height of a tree without taking your feet off the ground? With a home-made clinometer, of course! On Friday 11th May, Year 5 visited Bedgebury Pinetum where they enjoyed a walk in the woods as well as the opportunity to get to grips with some hands-on STEM activities. The Year 5 pupils used estimation to work out the number of leaves on a tree (a useful skill if you ever have to guess the number of sweets in a jar!) and looked for symmetrical patterns in nature. They also honed their observation skills by identifying different tree species and took it in turns leading the group using a map of the site.

How fortunate we are to have such a venue on our doorstep. The day was sunny and bright, with hardly anyone else around: it really was a walk in the park!
