Vinehall Breaks Records at Hastings Music Festival

Hasting International Music Festival March 2018

Vinehall School is delighted to announce a record-breaking year at the Hastings International Musical Festival, not just for the school with their 37 wins, but also for making Festival History.  The Junior Choir were awarded a staggering 95 Marks for their rendition of Chattanooga Choo Choo and a Medley from Mary Poppins.

Our very own Lancelot L won the under 16 Piano Concerto and was awarded Gold Medal Piano with a score of 91 and Gold Medal Violin with the score of 95!  That entitled him to be put forward for the Hastings Young Musician of the year where the two adjudicators, Ken Roberts and Neil Jenkins, were undecided on which instrument to place him first and decided to give him 1st equal.

From our prize winners, four soloists and our Junior Choir were asked to perform at the Concert Finale.  From the Brass, Thomas S played his Darth Vader March; on Strings, Isabel T playedthe elegant Seitz Concerto on violin and Rupert S played the Jupiter Chorale movingly on his cello. Both Isabel and Rupert were also awarded a joint trophy for the most promising string players.

Lancelot was asked to perform on both his instruments; on the piano he swept us away with Debussy’s Dr Gradus ad Parnassum and wowed us with Kreislers’ Praeludium and Allegro on violin.  His final performance of the Festival won the audience prize of £200 for the best solo performance of the night.

Why do we enter this Festival and what have the children learnt?  Well, without a doubt they have had a target and learnt repertoire outside of the exam syllabus and have performed on two very different and beautiful stages. They have gained performance experience and learnt to listen and share other performers’ experiences.  At Vinehall they have worked individually on their solos but also, and more importantly, at piano duets, brass trios, string quartets and a dectet and the choirs had fun creating and making music. Music is a gift and one to be shared by all. Long live the Festival!
