“The human brain starts working the moment you are born and never stops until you stand up to speak in public!”
On Monday 15th January 2018 we were delighted to welcome Colonel Matthew Van Grutten to the Chaplin Theatre to work with our Year 7 and 8 pupils. The aim was to ensure that the children’s brains keep working and that they learn the skills necessary to compose and deliver an effective speech. Matt’s company, the Flinch Group, travels all over the world to work with businessmen, politicians, sportspeople and celebrities to enable them to make public addresses, negotiate deals, improve teamwork and learn interview techniques. During a fun and practical morning, Matt taught the children about ideal structure – a strong start, key messages, evidence and conclusion. He filmed early efforts to show the pupils how their performance improved after tips on delivery – pausing to allow a message to sink in, eye contact, pace and personality.
All pupils will continue this work in class. Finalists will be selected and parents will be invited to listen to their speeches on Friday 2nd February 2018 when Matt will return to offer feedback and select a winning team.
Mrs Gearey and I certainly learned a great deal during the morning and hope the children benefitted greatly.
